1/2SCR in the Sinai – MFO 61 – 2015-16

1st Squadron 2 SCR were in Egypt for the Multinational Force and Observer Mission (MFO 61) from November 2015 to August 2016. They were the only OCONUS based unit to ever deploy to the Sinai. This mission has gone on since 1984 and will likely continue indefinitely. The orange helmets set 1/2SCR apart as peace observers. 1st Squadron ran observation posts and base security missions along 400km of coastline and international boundary, between Egypt and Israel. The mission was to report violations of the 1979 treaty of peace between Egypt and Israel. It was much more complicated by ISIS operating in the same Area of Operations. 1/2SCR’s deployment started right as ISIS downed a Russian air liner in 2015.  The unit performed very well and earned an Army Superior Unit Award.
